Why is sleep important for children?

How much sleep does a child need a night?

The amount of sleep a child needs depends on their age. The AAP recommends the following.

  • 4 to 12 months: 12 to 16 hours
  • 1 to 2 years: 11 to 14 hours
  • 3 to 5 years: 10 to 13 hours
  • 6 to 12 years: 9 to 12 hours
  • 13 to 18 years: 8 to 10 hours

Anyone over age 18 should aim for seven to nine hours of sleep a night.
